Woody's World: Music of Woody Guthrie and Friends

Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Guthrie (July 14, 1912–October 3, 1967) was arguably America's most prolific and influential writer and singer of folk songs. His most iconic song is "This Land Is Your Land", and he wrote hundreds of other soulful ballads, political songs, protest songs, and songs for his children‹many of them as yet unscored. Guthrie leapt into prominence in the 1940s when Alan Lomax recorded his songs and stories about the Oklahoma dustbowl for the Library of Congress. Woody's music was informed by friends such as Leadbelly and Pete Seeger, and it influenced future generations of songwriters like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, and Bruce Springsteen. In this centennial year of Guthrie's birth–when his home state has finally, somewhat grudgingly acknowledged her native son–we are proud to celebrate the rich legacy of his gift to American music.
